Causes of Gum Recession

The etiology of gum recession can be quite complex and multifaceted (coexistence of several triggers). Common causes include:

  • Hereditary factors.
  • Ageing (There is however no consensus on age-related causes).
  • Hormonal fluctuations and imbalances.
  • Psychological factors such as anxiety disorders, stress disorders, feeding and eating disorders.
  • Poor or unhealthy nutrition.
  • Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs.
  • Absence of/improper oral hygiene. Aggressive toothbrushing can be as damaging as no brushing at all. On the other hand, some people having overly crooked teeth may be meticulous enough. However, the impaired alignment of their dentition may render their efforts inefficient (e.g., toothbrush struggling to reach certain areas).
  • Teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism).
  • Former dental interventions with mediocre results (defective crowns, fillings, etc.).
  • Well-worn dentures and consequent bacterial proliferation.
  • Excessive plaque buildup turned into dental calculus.
  • Imprudent use of over-the-counter gadgets like whitening pens and strips.
  • Diabetes.
  • Other medical conditions such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), etc.

    Symptoms of Gum Recession

Gingival recession can manifest itself in different ways. Here’s a list of some symptoms to watch for:

    • Oversensitivity to heat and cold.
    • Bleeding that occurs during or after brushing and flossing.
    • Changes in tooth appearance such as wider space between teeth and gums, visible tooth roots.
    • Changes in gingival color, especially when it looks more reddish.
    • Swollen and/or painful gums.
    • Loosened teeth and consequent changes in the bite.
    • Halitosis (bad breath).

    Risks and Complications

The most important information to be given to patients affected by gum recession Istanbul-wide is about the risks. In effect, untreated receding gums are likely to lead to several problems that can be more or less severe. Patients may develop a periodontal disease, which typically comprises 4 stages:

    1. Gingivitis: This stage is a relatively mild one and reversible in most cases. The tricky part is that it may be painless, thus sneaky and difficult to detect. It can be treated thanks to a thorough dental cleaning, regular dental follow-up, and good oral hygiene.
    2. Slight periodontal disease: This stage is already harder to reverse. It is because the bacterial infection has already reached the bone surface. Scaling and root planing are the most commonly prescribed solutions. The goal is to ensure a deeper cleaning of all plaque residues up to the gum line and root level.
    3. Moderate periodontal disease: There is more noticeable damage at this stage. Here again, scaling and root planing can be employed, along with root smoothing procedures. Indeed, rendering the surfaces more even can considerably reduce the space where bacteria is likely to grow further.
    4. Advanced periodontal disease: In this more severe stage, the infection is now a real threat and likely to cause additional diseases. Bone loss is one of the frequent consequences. More elaborate treatments such as gum grafting, laser therapy, and periodontal surgery can be prescribed. Prevention is undoubtedly the best ‘treatment’. It includes proper oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and breaking harmful habits like smoking. The latter is especially crucial for the potential success of any dental treatment. In case the damage has reached critical levels, surgery is often the last option. It involves the replacement of the decayed connective tissue by others collected from other parts of the buccal cavity. Other times, it realigns the gum line by displacing preserved tissues over the damaged areas.

    FAQs about Gum Recession

    Do receding gums grow back?

Not really. Their self-repairing potential is compromised, especially in advanced stages.
Appropriate dental and periodontal treatments can help stop the deterioration process though.

How much do those treatments cost?

Various cases of gum recession are treated in Istanbul. It is not possible to give a unique and fix price here.
The best option is to consult your dental professional and get personalized pricing.

    Is gum grafting painful?

The procedure itself is carried out under local anesthetic, so you will probably not feel any pain at all.
If you feel any discomfort after the treatment, your doctor may prescribe some pain relievers like acetaminophen or naproxen.
